Protecting Patient Information During X-Ray Film Purging
HIPAA compliant x-ray film destruction requires appropriate safeguards when archived film contains patient-identifying information. X-Ray Purging uses established procedures designed to protect the confidentiality and security of sensitive healthcare materials from initial handling through final destruction.
Our procedures address secure handling, chain of custody, transportation, destruction, documentation and personnel confidentiality to help healthcare facilities manage eligible archived x-ray film securely and responsibly.

How X-Ray Purging Protects PHI
When archived x-ray film contains patient-identifying information, protecting that information requires safeguards throughout the entire purging process. Our procedures are designed to maintain security from the time eligible film is identified and handled through transportation, destruction and final documentation.
Secure Identification & Handling
Archived x-ray film is treated as potentially containing protected health information unless confirmed otherwise. Personnel handling the material follow established confidentiality procedures, and eligible film is maintained in a controlled and secure manner throughout the purging process.
Documented Chain of Custody
Chain-of-custody procedures are used to account for archived x-ray film from pickup through final destruction. Materials are handled by designated personnel and maintained in secure containers during transport.
Secure Transportation
Archived x-ray film is transported using secure procedures designed to limit access to authorized personnel. Materials remain secured during transport and are maintained under appropriate supervision or security until they reach the destruction process.
Secure X-Ray Film Destruction
X-ray film is destroyed using industrial processing or other approved destruction methods designed to render patient information unreadable and irrecoverable. The destruction process also allows eligible x-ray film to be processed for responsible recycling and silver recovery.
Certificate of Destruction
Following completion of the project, X-Ray Purging provides documentation confirming destruction of the material. This Certificate of Destruction provides the facility with a record that the archived x-ray film was securely processed and destroyed.
Personnel Training & Confidentiality
Personnel involved in x-ray film purging projects are expected to follow established confidentiality and secure-handling procedures. Internal policies govern the handling of sensitive materials throughout the project.
Business Associate Agreements
X-Ray Purging operates as a Business Associate when applicable to the services being provided. Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) are available upon request, and applicable responsibilities for the protection of protected health information are incorporated into our handling procedures.
Ongoing Risk Mitigation & Best Practices
X-Ray Purging periodically reviews its security and operational procedures and works to maintain appropriate safeguards for sensitive materials. Procedures also address reporting and response in the event of a potential security incident.
HIPAA-Compliant X-Ray Film Destruction for Healthcare Facilities
Hospitals, imaging centers and other healthcare organizations may still have archived diagnostic x-ray film stored onsite or in off-site records storage. When that film is eligible for disposal, the project involves more than simply removing old records — patient information must remain protected throughout the process.
X-Ray Purging provides a complete service for qualifying archived film projects, including removal, secure handling, transportation, destruction and responsible recycling. Our goal is to allow facility personnel to turn over the physical handling of the project while maintaining appropriate safeguards for sensitive healthcare materials.
Retention Requirements Come Before Destruction
Before archived x-ray film is destroyed, healthcare facilities should determine that all applicable medical-record retention requirements have been satisfied. Retention periods can vary based on state requirements, facility type, patient age and other circumstances.
To help facilities evaluate their archived records, review our X-Ray Record Retention Requirements by State resource for state-specific information that may apply to your facility.
Secure Destruction With Documentation
Once eligible archived x-ray film has been collected, the material is processed using destruction methods designed to render patient information unreadable and irrecoverable. Eligible film is then responsibly recycled, allowing recoverable silver to be reclaimed rather than treating the material as ordinary waste.
At the completion of the project, X-Ray Purging provides a Certificate of Destruction documenting the secure destruction of the archived film. This gives the healthcare facility a record of the completed destruction process.
Have Archived X-Ray Film Ready for Disposal?
